Hallo, Leute,

Jens

Hallo Stefan, Hallo Jens,
kurzfristig kann ich euch nur mir SW Bildern und Text in Englisch helfen. Bis die entsprechenden Artikel in der Fahrzeughistorie erscheinen dauert es noch ein Weilchen :( .

Sonnenblenden:

Sun Visor
Sun visors on the Beetle during the 1950's were made of transparent green plastic. The standard sedan came without sun visors through the 1950's. Sun visor equipping of the deluxe and cabriolet Beetle were as follows.
To June 1949, no sun visors were supplied on the Beetle. The deluxe and convertible, when introduced in June 1949, came equipped with a driver's side visor. With the introduction of the visor came a new means of attaching the mirror. The new mounting bracket held a horizontal rod to which, on one end, the visor was attached. On the other end of the rod, after it curved downward 90 degrees, the rear view mirror was attached. A second visor for the passenger was available as an option.
The convertible, beginning in May 1954, came with two sun visors as standard equipment. On the deluxe sedan, through July 1959, only one visor was standard equipment. A second sun visor was available optionally on the sedan.

For 1956, in August 1955, the sun visor was made slightly larger. In addition, the back edge was no longer straight. The rear edge on the new visor curved slightly outward.
In late 1958, the center bracket was changed so the means of attaching the sun visor was changed. The new sun visor support arms fit into holes in the rear view mirror bracket.
The convertible sun visors changed from transparent to padded vinyl in January 1959. This change was effective from chassis #: 2 -252 685.
In August of 1959 the sedan sun visor was changed from hard plastic to a padded vinyl material. In addi-tion, for the first time, a passenger's sun visor was standard equipment on the sedan.

Innenspiegel:

Inside Mirror
During the 1950's different Beetle models and years used various means to attach the rear view mir-ror. Notice also that the shape of the mirror changed during this period. First, a look at the sedan inside mirror.
The early Beetle, through May 1949, had an oval mirror. The back center of this mirror was attached to a bracket with a triangular stamping at its top end. Three screws fit through three holes in this bracket to hold the mirror in place. The mirror was offset from its banger (top to bottom) so that it could be turned one way for a tall driver and rotated 180 degrees for a shorter driver. Since the standard sedan had no sun visors, it continued through the 1950's with the mirror mounting set-up mentioned above. The shape of the standard mirror changed when the shape of the cabriolet or deluxe rear view mirrors changed.
In June 1949, the inside mirror was changed from oval to rectangular. The deluxe had a bright-metal backed mirror while the standard rear view mirror had a painted back finish.

The rear view mirror was attached differently on the deluxe and cabriolet when introduced, than on the standard sedan. Both the deluxe and cabriolet had a bracket mounted above the windshield. The bracket was triangular on the deluxe sedan and, because of space considerations, rectangular on the convertible.
The bracket mentioned above held a chrome plated rod. On the left end the visor was attached. On the right end, after it curved downward 90 degrees, the rectangular mirror was attached.
From October 1952 to July 1957, the shape of the mirror on all Beetle models became more rounded at the top and bottom. This was a noticeable change from the previously rectangular mirror. The standard mirror was still mounted directly below the bracket

since no visor was included. It also continued to have a painted finish on the mirror housing. The deluxe Beetle sedan still had a bright metal finish on the mirror exterior and had one sun visor attached.
In August 1957 the inside mirror changed again. The mirror was made slightly larger and more oval in shape. Since more could be seen out of the new, larger rear window, a larger rear view mirror was needed.
In addition, the rear view mirror was offset from its mounting arm in a way not done before. The old mirror was attached, high or low, at the center of the mirror back. The new mirror was offset left to right and/ or high or low from its mounting arm. Setting the off-set to the right on LHD Beetles brought the mirror closer to the driver.
At this time the mirror was mounted directly below its hanger bracket on all Beetles. The sun visor attached directly into the top part of the new bracket. The passenger sun visor continued as an option on the deluxe Beetle sedan.
Rear view mirrors on the Beetle cabriolet changed in the same time and shape sequence as did those on the Beetle sedan. The method of mirror attachment on the cabriolets was different than that used on the sedan.
Both cabriolets, the Karmann and the Hebmüller, used a different visor/mirror mounting bracket than did the sedan. Since there was a smaller area in which

to fit the bracket on the convertibles, the triangleshaped sedan bracket was modified and made rectangular. In essence, the top of the sedan bracket was cut off to make the cabriolet visor bracket. This bracket was held in place with two screws, while the sedan version was secured with three. As on the deluxe, the cabriolet mirror exterior and support arm had a bright metal finish.
Other than the mounting bracket, nothing was dif-ferent on the Hebmüller mirror than that on the deluxe sedan.
The 1949 Karmann used the same mirror and bracket as did the Hebmüller. In 1950, the Karmann came with a new mirror attaching arm. This new arm had a pivot in the center that allowed it to rotate up and down. In addition, it had an ivory knob screwed in of the mounting bracket. This knob made fore and aft adjustment of the mirror assembly possible.
On the new arm, down was the mirror position for when the top was up thus enabling the driver to see out the rear window. The up mirror position was for when the top was down. When the top was down on the Karmann, it rested up on the top of the back of the car. With the mirror in the normal (down) position it was useless because the top was the only thing visible. Rotating the mirror up put it high enough to view over the top of the top.

The Hebmüller never received this new mirror for two reasons. First was the fact that it was out of pro-duction by this time. Second was that since its top, when down, was recessed below the top of the Body line no raised mirror was necessary.
For 1952 the white knob was eliminated. In Octo-ber 1952, the mirror did not change, but the pivot mechanism did. The new arrangement allowed much greater high/low adjustment than the earlier mirror.
Two sun visors were introduced as standard equip-ment in May 1954. The new mirror attaching arm was secured to the right (passenger's) side sun visor rod. This convertible mirror bracket was totally different than the sedan version therefore the two were not interchangeable.
In late 1958 the cabriolet mirror mounting bracket changed. This changed occurred at the same time as an the sedan. The new bracket had the mirror support arm dropping down from its center. The cabriolet continued with the pivoting arm, but used a modified style that was not interchangeable with the one used before. See picture for comparison of the two styles.

Hallo Ralf,

Stefan
